East Africa Web3 Summit: A Big Success

Nairobi’s Hyatt Regency played host to more than 80 developers, policymakers and industry leaders late last month for the East Africa Web3 Innovation Summit, an all-day convocation that recast blockchain from speculative playground to problem-solving toolkit2. Organized by the IOTA Foundation alongside TradeMark Africa, the meeting opened with co-founder Dominik Schiener’s call for “real-world use” and quickly turned practical: live demos of cross-border trade pipelines, workshops on Move-based smart contracts, and previews of grant programs aimed at local builders3.

Discussion never strayed far from East Africa’s most pressing needs. Panels on decentralized identity weighed how a portable digital ID might streamline remittances for Kenya’s gig workers, while supply-chain technologists showcased tamper-proof logistics ledgers designed to cut red tape at Mombasa’s port.
